Ontario Yachts, located in Burlington,
Ontario, Canada, is the builder of Ideal 18's. The company
produces the Etchells 22, Sonar, Albacore,
International 14, and Optimist dinghy, many of which have won
North American championships.
Production of the Ideal 18 includes an exclusive keel
encapsulation process, guaranteeing exact duplication

| General Construction |
|
Hull
One-piece assembly of hand-laid fiberglass with cor-mat coring
for extra strength and impact resistance. Built-in flotation.
Hull Reinforcement
Special grid bonds hull, deck, cockpit, mast step, and
chainplates into a super-strong unit.
Deck
Deck and cockpit are a single unit. Molded splashrail.
Non-skid side
decks and foredeck. Open cuddy for storage
of spinnaker, seabags, and optional 2 hp outboard.
Cockpit
8' long molded seats with angled backs. Non-skid sole drains
into twin bilge sumps with Elvstrom-style bailers. Open transom
acts as a swim platform. Central barney post anchors mainsheet
block.
Keel
An epoxy-encapsulated lead casting weighing 700 lbs. Keel is
attached with three 1/2" stainless steel keelbolts.
Rudder
Elliptically shaped and inboard hung; balanced and light.
Wood tiller, aluminum tiller extension are standard.
Rigging
Mast and boom are aircraft-grade aluminum. Mast
is stepped on the keel and hinged for trailering or storing.
Fractional rig with swept spreaders, fixed headstay,
upper and lower shrouds. Boom vang, outhaul, reefing system,
and cunningham are standard. No backstay.
Sails
Class-legal main and 95% jib with sailbag are standard.
Main is fully-battened, complete with cunningham, reef points,
class insignia, and numbers. Jib is self-tacking and roller
furling, with leechline and five-position adjustable
clewboard. 245 sq. ft. class spinnaker with aluminum pole
is optional.
Hardware
Harken equipped. Deck and cockpit fittings mounted with
stainless steel hardware. Running rigging is Dacron and
Spectra, cut to length and fitted for each application.
Trailer
Optional custom trailer is available; suitable for ramp
or hoist launching. Towing weight is only 1,900 lbs.,
easily towed by most family vehichles.

the console.
Trailer uses 4 pads, a keel rest, and bow guide to secure the boat.
